depends on the diameter of your lens(es)...
if you have lots of different lenses you would be best with the square ones and different connecting rings...
it would be cheaper too...
i have both... the cokin 6x6 filter system fits any lens diameter, whereas the hoyas are one size... which can be costly when you ve got a bag of lenses with different diamters...
I'd go with the Lee or Cokin filters for those purposes. The ability to frame a shot and then slide a grad filter to where it needs to be is a great tool. With a screw on filter, you are much more limited in how you can frame a shot when using graduated filters.
As already posted above, if you just need a UV or polarizer, a screw-in filter
The slot in systems (such as the Lee filters) are by far more versatile. You can get CPLs for slot in filters. It's the only way you can correctly used graduated filters which are pretty useful for landscapes.
That said if you were to buy one filter then that filter would be a screw in circular polariser rather than anything else. It's
